Choosing a board

What size board should I choose?

We recommend anyone under 50kg ride our 28” Cruisers and Surf Skates. Smaller riders find it easier to shift weight and carve on a smaller deck. If you’re over 50kg, our 31” Cruisers, Surf Skates and Longboards will suit you better.

Kids learning to skate do especially well on the 28” Cruiser, thanks to its soft wheels and stable, forgiving ride. Adults learning from scratch can also start on a 28”, though the 31” Cruiser or 38” Longboard is a touch easier to balance on. Bigger boards are more stable, the same way a longboard is easier to learn to surf on than a shortboard.

Surfers wanting to train turns on flat days should look at our 28” Grom models (under 50kg), 31” Surf Skates (50–80kg) or 33” Surf Skates (80kg+) for a bigger board with more drive. Still not sure? Message us and we’ll help you pick.

What’s the difference between a Cruiser, a Surf Skate and a Longboard?

A Cruiser is our most compact, everyday board. It’s light, easy to carry, and built for short trips and quick fun.

A Surf Skate runs our reverse kingpin surf trucks front and back, so both ends turn together. You can pump and carve down the street the same way you’d generate speed on a wave, without pushing.

A Longboard is longer and more stable again, better suited to covering distance, cruising comfortably, or riders who want a smoother, more planted ride.

If you’re coming from surfing, a Surf Skate will feel most familiar. If you just want the easiest way to get around, start with a Cruiser.

How strong are OBfive decks?

Every OBfive Cruiser and Surf Skate deck is built to withstand a breaking strain of 400kg. No matter your size, riding style or how hard you push it, you can trust your board to hold up. It’s one of the reasons our boards carry a 12-month warranty with confidence.

Is there a weight limit on OBfive boards?

Our Cruiser and Surf Skate decks are built to a breaking strain of 400kg, so they comfortably handle riders of all sizes. For the best ride quality and control, we suggest most adult riders stay under 100kg per board, well within the deck’s tested strength.

Board care & troubleshooting

My wheels won’t spin freely. Is that a fault?

Not usually! During assembly we use an impact wrench to tighten wheel nuts evenly across every board, which occasionally over-tightens a wheel. Just loosen the nut about a quarter turn with a T-tool or wrench and it’ll spin freely.

My brand new board feels stiff or squeaks a little. Is that normal?

Yes, that’s completely normal on a new board. Components need a little time to wear in. If it doesn’t settle after regular use, check that your trucks and kingpin nut are tightened to the right level, and get in touch if it’s still bothering you.

How do I look after my board?

Keep your bearings away from water, wipe your deck down with a dry or barely damp cloth rather than hosing it off, and let it dry in a shaded area out of direct sunlight. Give your trucks, kingpin and bolts a periodic check to make sure nothing’s worked loose.

You can lightly spray inside your bearings and any other moving parts with Inox (available at Bunnings) to keep things running smooth. A little regular care goes a long way toward keeping your board riding like new.

Can I get my board wet?

We recommend keeping your board out of the water where you can. Both fresh and salt water can cause your bearings and other components to rust over time, which shortens their life.
